Organize your ideas and desires before getting bids

Are you ready to get bids on your project?
Gathering the following information will be extremely helpful, prior to obtaining bids from contractors. Use a pocket folder, binder or file box.

WHAT IS THE SCOPE OF YOUR PROJECT? Determine how much work you would like done (a single accent wall, or many rooms), how these areas will be used (i.e. formal, kids, casual), and how you will be decorating them.

DETERMINE YOUR PROJECT AREA: Existing room, remodelled area, new construction, interior/exterior, ceiling heights, existing or planned texture (smooth-wall, orange peel, knock-down, etc).

ORGANIZE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS & SAMPLES: Find magazine clippings, color swatches, website links, or other examples of the look you are after, to show at your appointments.  Fabric, tiles, carpet samples or any other items that are not yet installed in the room should also be present for color-matching purposes.

WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET? Have a realistic idea of how much you want to spend.

ANY SPECIAL PARAMETERS? Deadlines, accessibility, and other information important to your contractors. (For instance: your driveway turns into a lake when it rains; no noise is allowed at certain times of day, your dogs bite visitors, etc.)

WHO MAKES THE DECISIONS? Determine who is responsible for final choice of style, finishes and colors.  ALL persons with decision-making power (spouse, decorator, child), should be available for bids and presentations. Decide what your choice of contractor will be based on, in order of importance to YOU.  Quality, artistic style, references, chemistry, budget limit, ability to meet deadlines, etc. are all considerations.  Sharing your priorities with your bidders will help them determine if and how they can satisfy your needs.
